Small Chicken Coop

How to Build a Small Chicken Coop

Do you remember, as a child, trying to build a chicken coop? I remember trying this when I was much younger.  I could not figure out the plans but I did manage to build something that did the job.  I will never forget how proud I was of that coop.

Now I am a man with my own children.  Now my own sons are asking to build a chicken hutch, just like I wanted to do when I was their age.  Of course I supported them in this project and told them I would help them get started.

Things are different now.  My boys could easily do a search on the internet and download an ebook that would tell them how to build their own chicken hutch.  Certainly this is less complicated than my experience.  They are now able to build an amazing hutch for our backyard; this is so exciting for them.  I know it will increase their independence and they will feel proud. I know that building a chicken hutch is a project they can accomplish without much adult direction or supervision.

In reality, the end result looked really great and indeed they were able to do it on their own.  This is a very kid friendly project that I am sure your children would like to do also.  Projects like this give children the chance to feel the pride of having accomplished something on their very own.

The instruction manual was easy to understand and free.  There are adaptations that address creating a moveable chicken hutch. You can also find plans for larger or smaller hutches, depending on the size of your flock.

The only expense was the materials; everything was included in the plan.  It even addressed ventilation and gave instructions about where to place windows.  The plans were very complete.

We are now ready to add the chickens.  I can’t believe my sons managed to build this all on their own.

Having achieved this accomplishment, they are now ready for more difficult projects.  I know they can handle it.  They are very excited about tackling something else without my help.
