Common Errors in DIY Chicken Coop Building

Once you start building your own chicken coop, there are some very important mistakes you should try to avoid.  Lots of well-intentioned chicken farmers just start building without fully thinking about all the details that ultimately will affect the end result.

If you know what mistakes to watch for, then you will know a good do-it-yourself plan when you find it and you won’t make these errors.

Here are the most common mistakes you need to be aware of:

Building the Coop in the Wrong Size

The first thing you need to make sure of is that the plans are meant for a coop that will hold the number of birds you own.  Chickens demand a certain amount of space and this affects the number of eggs they lay.  If the chickens feel crowded they won’t lay as many eggs.

If the first thing you think about is finding a plan that provides a formula for figuring out how much room your chickens need, you will be much happier with your final product.  If you don’t properly plan for the correct size and you just build what you think you need, you will find you have very expensive problems to fix.

Putting the Windows On the Wrong Size

The next thing to think about is the right amount of sunlight.  Chickens need the right amount of sunlight if you expect them to provide you with eggs.  If they don’t get enough sun, they won’t lay.  This defeats the purpose of being a chicken farmer!

This will not be a problem if you use a building plan that refers to the location of the windows.  You need the windows to face a specific location at a specific height in proportion to the rest of the wall.

If you don’t put the windows in properly, you will need to install electric lights and this can be expensive, hard to do and a waste of time.

Building a Bad Fence

You also need to think about the fence.  You need to know, before you start to build, what enemies will threaten your flock.  The predators in your area will determine the type of fence you build.  It needs to be effective in keeping this specific type of animal out.  Without considering this, you could find that all your hard work is pointless, since your flock will be destroyed.

It is pointless to build a fence that is not the right type, so it is very important that you find out what kind you need.

So many hopeful chicken farmers make these mistakes and they are so easy to avoid if the right plan is picked from the beginning.  Knowing what mistakes too avoid will help you complete a successful project.
