Tips to Help You Choose Quality Chicken Coop Kits

With so many chicken coop kits on the market today, the choices can be overwhelming to someone who lacks the experience and know how.  Follow these tips to ensure you buy a top quality chicken coop kits.

Tip #1 Easy Cleaning, Easy Maintenance

Cleaning your chicken coop is a vital part of owning chickens. However, many people don’t like cleaning their coops because it is messy and difficult. This is mainly caused by a faulty chicken coop design and poor craftmanship.

Well built chicken coops will have a sloped bottom floor to allow ample drainage when washing the coop - the slope should be downward towards the main front door. This also prevents water puddling in the center of the coop, which can increase the drying time dramatically.

Tip #2 - Allow Proper Ventilation

Proper ventilation is also a crucial part of a quality chicken coop kit. Without a correct flow of air, your chickens can suffer from disease and bacteria. Sliding windows and an easy to open front door should allow ample ventilation for your chickens.

Tip #3 - Invest in Thick Wire Mesh

A properly built chicken coop should have thick wire mesh for the windows and doors. Even the smallest predators can chew through a wire mesh door or window, leaving your chickens highly vulnerable. Quality chicken coop kits don’t skimp on this area.

Tip #4 Proper Lightning

A high quality chicken coop will always come with, or have open spots for electric lightning. Light not only allows you to see your chickens in the dark - should you need it - but it also provides warmth in the colder seasons.

Obviously there are many more things you should look for when designing or purchasing your own chicken coop kit.

Should you decide to build your own chicken coop (recommended), you need a good guide with proper designs and plans. A great manual that I still use to this day can be found here: Build a Chicken Coop in 3 Days
